Synopsis
DIGITAL ART AT THE VENICE BIENNALE FESTIVAL
John Cale, a co-founder of the group The Velvet Underground, is just one of the stars at this year's Venice Biennale who also appears in the line up of Digital Planet.
Gareth Mitchell and Bill Thompson make the pilgrimage to Venice to look at the way new technology is influencing art. Each year digital art expands with the latest gadgets which enhance the resolution of images and improve the quality of film and video, but is it matched by radical changes to the art?
As well as John Cale, the Digital Planet duo catch up with the film maker, Peter Greenaway, renowned for his carefully crafted and witty films like The Draughtman's Contract and A Zed & Two Noughts.
A range of artist from Northern Ireland's Susan MacWilliam and Canada's Mark Lewis also feature on this special edition of the programme.
And Dropstuff, who run a revolutionary interactive platform at the Biennale, broadcast art on a huge screen in Venice, on home computers and on your mobile phone all at the same time. At this most elite of art festivals, Gareth and Bill investigate whether Dropstuff heralds a future where art is no longer as dependent on traditional art galleries and museums.
