The zeal of the convert is a factor not just in religion but in scientific debate as well. Mark Lynas is a veteran green activist who led a campaign to vandalise experimental genetically modified crops. But that was then; now he says GM technology is entirely safe, and a necessity if we're to feed the planet. He's made a similar U-turn on nuclear power too. He says he's junked ideology in favour of hard science. Is it really as simple as that?
