The Sound of Cycling

Today, as part of 6 Music Celebrates Cycling, Mary Anne welcomes Johnny Random - who makes music on his bicycle.

With Le Tour De France this year starting in Yorkshire, 6 Music Celebrates Cycling, and today Mary Anne welcomes special guests who explore the sounds and music involved in the noble sport.

Ralf Hütter of Kraftwerk will make a cameo to explain what it is about the bicycle that inspires him so much. Yesterday's Album of the Day, Kraftwerk's Tour De France, is notable for its use of sampled voices and cycling sounds. It is said that in the old days, the Kraftwerk bus would drop Hütter 100 miles from the next music venue, and he would cycle the rest of the way.

Also on the show is composer Johnny Random, who breaks new ground with musical compositions made exclusively from everyday objects. His debut single, "Bespoken", explored the full potential of sounds generated from bicycles and their components, creating beautiful and thought-provoking music. Tune in to hear how it works.

Finally, you will hear from musicians Gruff Rhys and Lianne La Havas on why they love their bikes.

6 Music Celebrates Cycling features shows across the network capturing the spirit of the sport, celebrating the ever-growing community of cyclists, and exploring the musical choices and passions of the professionals. Plus Gideon Coe presents a special show today (10am-1pm) live from BBC Leeds for Le Grand Depart at midday, from Leeds to Harrogate.
