It's a beautiful Spring day. Tony's happy, but Pat hasn't seen Tom since breakfast.
Helen helps Kirsty get ready and remarks on how beautiful she looks. Kirsty hugs Helen, so excited to be marrying Tom.
Roy encourages Tom to relax. Pat and Tony are aghast at the sight of a vintage Ferguson tractor, hired by Roy to take Tom. Roy realises it's the same model that John drove when he was killed. Roy apologises profusely to Tom, who asks him to just shut up about it.
Kirsty rides a horse-drawn haywain to the church, to many cheers and good wishes. As the fiddler plays, Kirsty vows to enjoy every single minute.
But Tom's not at the lych gate as planned. Roy explains that Tom's in a bit of a state.
Tom meets Kirsty to tell her he can't go through with it. Kirsty agrees that it has all been too much. But they can roll things back and postpone the wedding, forget about the house or rethink where they'll live. Tom explains that he can't do any of it. They can't stay together.
Kirsty is angry and humiliated. Why did he let things get so far? She sobs wildly. The hungry congregation hear the sound of her wails echoing around the church.
