In a special report Louise Minchin investigates our heritage at risk in the North West, and asks is it too late to save some of the regions finest historic buildings from ruin. Along the way she joins the congregation who meet in a tent inside Liverpool's oldest church; the ancient monument in a St Helens supermarket car park, and the fight to save the forgotten First World War aircraft hangars in a field in Ellesmere Port.

    Victoria Baths

    Manchester's Victoria Baths was awarded £3.4m for winning the first series of the BBC show Restoration 10 years ago.

     

    Ten years on there has been considerable work done on the Edwardian building and it is now used for events and weddings.

     

    But, the dream of restoring it back to its original use is yet to be realised fully.

  • The church where worshippers pray in an indoor tent

    St James in the City in Liverpool

    St James is the oldest standing church in Liverpool but it was forced to close in 1972 due to dwindling numbers.

     

    Over the last 40 years it has become derelict but now there are ambitious £2 million plans to restore it to its former glory.

     


    Two years ago it reopened as St James in the City and in the meantime its congregation meets in a large tent in the church, until the money can be raised.
