  • Pause for Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, an Anglican vicar in Richmond.

I know it’s only October 1st and not January 1st, but the winds of change and new resolutions are definitely in the air. Recently, Nick Clegg told the UN General Assembly that it must reform if it isn’t to become ‘a relic of a different time.’ And maybe that reformation has already started. Presidents Obama and Rouhani had the first direct contact between leaders of their two nations since 1979, and the UN Security Council broke their two and a half year deadlock over Syria by unanimously adopting a binding resolution that will rid Syria of its chemical weapons. While some changes can be mapped out in advance, many more take a leap of faith because the path isn’t always clear. For example, I’ve recently resigned from the lovely school where I’m Chaplain but I’ve little certainty as yet what work I’ll be doing instead. In the past I’ve driven myself to make work happen, and I haven’t allowed space for new things to emerge. Strangely, the work I do get has often come out of left field despite, rather than because of my efforts. So this time, believing the decision to move on is right, I’ve opted for the route of radical trust, playing my part but making space for the breath of God, the Spirit of life to expand into my experience and open it up in ways I can’t yet see.

In the summer everything went quiet and I thought radical trust wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Of course it’s at those times that trust is most needed. Since then some unexpected and lovely invitations have come along. When I leave school at Christmas there are projects in place for January. What comes after will only become clear as I go forward. As with Presidents Obama and Rouhani and with many of our lives we must often take the first step of change uncertain about what will follow but trusting the truth of St Augustine’s words when he said, “It is solved in the walking.”
