  • Pause for Thought

From Simon Cohen, who runs a communications agency.

For me, yesterday’s anniversary of Reverend Dr Martin Luther King’s most famous speech has given an insight into why spirituality is such an important part of life today.

Fifty years ago this very morning, millions of people woke up after a night filled with strange and wonderful dreams. Dreams of flying, dreams of soaring through the mountains of their minds, with cries of freedom ringing in the valleys below. Dreams of hope. Dreams of happiness.

The 250,000 people who showed up at Lincoln Memorial 50 years ago, were not there for Dr King. They were there to hear what he believed. To see if anyone else felt what they felt, believed what they believed. To hear something that tapped into the reservoirs of their own dreams, to feel at once legitimised, part of something bigger.

But while most parents today would share Dr King’s dream for his four little children, in 1963 it was a radical notion. To dare to dream big dreams, and to share those dreams, is to be vulnerable. So who are the dreamers today? Who has the moral courage to share their visions for a brighter future?

There are of course many of us. But in my experience religious and spiritual people are among the most open with their dreams, and for me this is why spirituality matters today. Whether it’s painting a picture of heaven or nirvana, whether it’s Christian, Hindu, Muslim, or Jew, they all start from the powerful words ‘I believe.’

Often, when we meet someone, we start with ‘so what do you do?’. But friendships, communities, movements start with ‘why’, not ‘what.’ Why do you do what you do? Tonight, dare to dream big dreams. And as the author Henry David Thoreau said ‘Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.’
