The event has a countryside theme and so Andy Sturgeon looks at the best cottage garden plants on offer, while Ann-Marie is on the trail of must-have flowers for scent. Designing with roses

Read on for a few design ideas for planting roses from the Historic Roses Society:

Faded tones

Faded tones

The subtle, faded tones from old English rose Café perfectly compliment the statuesque perennial foxglove, Digitalis mertonensis and powder-blue catmint Nepeta nervosa.

A riot of colour

A riot of colour

Create a riot of colour with the vibrant red rose Roundelay surrounded by the sunshine colours of Gaillardia Arizona Apricot.

Contrasting vertical accents

Contrasting vertical accents

Use vertical accents like Astilbe Deutschland and deep blue-purple lupin Gallery Blue to contrast with low-growing polyantha rose Little White Pet.

Echo and contrast

Echo and contrast
The scarlet petals of Rosa Roundelay are subtly echoed in the pink-tinged Penstemon Hewell Pink Bedder: contrasting yellow Phygelius x rectus Moonraker creates an exciting combination.
