Today's British symphonies are by Ralph Vaughan Williams - no. 9, his third symphony of the week - and James MacMillan, who conducts his own Third Symphony of 2002, entitled 'Silence' after the novel of the same name by the twentieth-century Japanese writer Shusaku Endo.
