Today's Prayer from Glenn Jordan
On this day in 1973 NASA launched the space station Skylab and it continued to conduct experiments and make observations in space until it broke up in 1979. Several years later in 1986 we got an even bigger space station after the Soviet Union launched Mir. The stuff of science fiction became science fact as men and women started to live in space.
Astrophysicists tell us that we are only really approaching an understanding of what we don’t know! There is so much more.
So if the sky is clear tonight, and you can find a penny, hold it up at arms length, and look at it through one eye, that penny is blocking out approximately 15m stars.
The Psalmist writes, that the stars of heaven are the work of God’s fingers. The kind of work that requires God’s complete attention.
The Psalmist further marvels that the God who created all this and keeps it moving is the same God who remains intimately attentive to the lives of human beings. In fact, Christians believe that the greatness of God is measured not just in his capacity to create the universe, but in his constant mindfulness of each individual. Even to the extent of being aware of the prayer we now express.
Dear God, faced with your marvellous creation help us keep perspective on our place and on the value of each human being you have brought to life. Preserve us from taking our life for granted and from treating others with disrespect.
