  • Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest.

Woody Allen once gave a rare personal interview on television. He even spoke about some of his early attempts at dating. At College he had a wonderful relationship which lasted for seven years. They planned to marry before it all fell through. “We split up because of religious differences”, he told the interviewer. “I was an agnostic and she was an atheist.”

Whether we appreciate him or not Woody Allen’s off the wall humour forces us to laugh ourselves into a form of personal truth. Truth, love and humour are an irresistible combination.

In the modern world most of us are too busy to reflect on life at all. Which could be why some people find short religious inserts like this PFT, helpful.
One of the paradoxes of modern life is that we are busy and bored at the same time. Our days are like over- stuffed suitcases bursting at the seams. No matter how much we do, there is always more to be done. Lurking at the back of our minds is the unanswerable question: if we did nothing would it make any difference? Our lives are full yet unfulfilled.

Personally, I think we need to have special friends and healthy relationships to survive without feeling used or cast aside. True friendships challenge us in a positive way but also affirm us in loving ways.

There is something almost sacred about a friend, who understands me; who listens to me and who coaxes me to reflect, change and grow. It takes a special friend to stay with us in times of failure and confusion; one who doesn’t need to know everything about me and who doesn’t have a mission to cure me.
Such a friend is amongst the most precious gifts God gives us. Even Shakespeare admitted as much: “A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you’ve been, accepts what you’ve become, and still gently allows you to grow.”
