Actress Helen Hunt sets out to explore her paternal family history. She knows that her grandparents lived in California in the early 1900s, but doesn't know much more than that. Her investigation takes her to 19th century San Francisco, where she uncovers the rags to riches story of her great great grandfather William Scholle, a German Jewish immigrant who arrived in California just as the gold was discovered.

Digging into another branch of her father's family tree, Helen jets off to Portland, Maine where she discovers that her great great grandmother was a key player in the women's rights movement.
