In this American episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, Hollywood legend Martin Sheen explores both sides of his European ancestry. He starts his journey in Ireland, where his mother was born and raised. Martin knows that his uncle Michael was a member of the Irish Republican Army fighting the British in the War of Independence, but is curious to find out more about Michael's involvement in the Irish Civil War. It turns out that Michael is not the only freedom fighter in Martin's family tree.

On the trail of his paternal Spanish ancestors Martin heads to Madrid, where he learns that his uncle Matias was imprisoned under General Franco's fascist regime. Digging deeper into his Spanish roots Martin is able to trace back to the 1700s and uncovers a story that he never would have expected.
