Although most famous for his novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell was also a prolific essayist and journalist.

A selection of Orwell's non-fiction writing begins with the powerful essay, A Hanging, Orwell's account of an execution that he attended while serving in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma during the 1920's: 'It is curious, but til that moment I had never realised what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man.'
