Last year I reached a significant age. If I’d had more courage on that momentous day I’d have presented my wife with a questionnaire. Instead, I asked myself the questions and answered with all the honest optimism I could muster. Here’s a selection. You’ll soon guess why that birthday was special, and also the title of my favourite Beatles song.

The first one is about my hair. Now that more of my forehead is visible, will you still send me valentines, celebrate my birthday and give me bottles of wine? Things look good here. I occasionally catch my wife studying me over an Americano in our local café, clearly wondering who this grey-haired old codger could be. I still get valentines, though, there’s a gratifying fuss over my birthdays, and we’ll go on drinking wine until it’s taken from our cold, dead hands.

So far, so good. Next question…If I stayed out to quarter to three would you lock the door?

This a bit sad. I might stay out until quarter to three, but nowadays it would probably be quarter to three in the afternoon. Taking five more minutes to buy vegetables at the village shop might invite mild enquiry when I got home, but I can’t imagine any slamming of doors and crashing of bolts. Mentally, we’re quite young, but we lack the physical energy to survive until the early hours. The nearest we come to a night on the tiles is a game of Scrabble. We enjoy Scrabble.

Right! The crucial questions….Do you still need me?

I think she’d say yes. That grey haired old codger who’s shared her life for forty-two years is one of two complex pieces that have dove-tailed together to make ‘Us’. We need Us. We always will.

Final question. ..Will you still feed me?

She does, very well. We love food. We celebrate being broke by going out to dinner, and take turns justifying such amiable lunacy. I wouldn’t give up that mutually beneficial talent for collusion for anything.

So, there we are. At sixty-four, who could ask for more? Not me.
