  • Mary Beard on online abuse

What’s it like to be the target of offensive sexist abuse? Cambridge classicist Dr Mary Beard found herself on the receiving end of misogynist insults on the internet and twitter, after her appearance as an expert panellist on BBC One’s Question Time last week. She joins Woman’s Hour to explain the impact of internet trolls, and why being targeted won’t keep her out of the public eye.

  • Barbara Hannigan – Soprano

The Soprano Barbara Hannigan is arguably the most highly-regarded interpreter of twentieth and twenty first century vocal music having given over 80 world premieres. She is releasing two new albums, including the world-premiere recording of Dutilleux’s Correspondances, and will be performing at the Rest is Noise Festival at the Southbank Centre.  She joins Jenni to discuss her singing career and why she has recently turned her hand to conducting.

    CDs:

Dutilleux’s Correspondances on DG Barbara Hannigan singing with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Benjamin Britten’s Les Illuminations, in collaboration with Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Channel Classics.

  • Tina Renton

Tina Renton can’t remember how many times her stepfather had raped her by the time she was 11. When the sexual abuse started, Tina just thought that was “what all dads did” and it was only after a sex education class at school that she realised what he was doing was wrong.  She reported the abuse, but no action was taken.  As an adult, Tina studied law and used her knowledge to bring her stepfather to justice and he was sent to prison for abusing her. We talk to Tina Renton about her book, “You Can’t Hide” which documents her battle to find justice.

  • Wildlife documentary director Felicity Egerton

David Attenborough’s latest journey through Africa reveals the vast and diverse continent as it’s never been seen before. Using the latest filming technology, BBC One’s ‘AFRICA’ uncovers previously unexplored places, extraordinary behaviours and an animal’s eye view of the action.   Jenni Murray is joined by Felicity Egerton, one of the directors behind the series.

  • Choosing your donor baby

Egg or sperm donation is frequently an option for couples facing infertility – but how far are they able to select qualities like height or hair colour in their child? We’re joined by geneticist Professor Marcus Pembrey, and founder of the Donor Conception Network Olivia Montuschi to discuss what’s possible, and what preferences matter to couples receiving donor sperm or eggs.
