Duke Ellington and Count Basie

Duration:
57 minutes
First broadcast:
Sunday 20 January 2013

Clare Teal features music from two of the longest-running bands in big band history. Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The Duke started his first band in 1917 in Washington DC, and he was still playing with his own band when he passed away at the age of 75 in 1974. Count Basie was from Red Bank, New Jersey, and formed his own band out of the remnants of the Benny Moten band in 1935; Basie's band was still playing in 1984 when the Count passed away at the age of 79.
