Pause For Thought with Reverend Alan Sorensen, Church of Scotland Minister and Broadcaster
A guid New Year to you! And allow me to bring you a piece of good news - only 354 days till Christmas! I'll bet that's a lot of comfort to those who still haven't finished last year's Xmas shopping. I made a New year resolution last year to get the Christmas shopping done by September, Xmas cards posted by October, and the tree up by Guy Fawkes night! How did I get on? You know how I got on! You
were the one that pushed me out of the way on Christmas Eve and grabbed the last boxed set of Call The Midwife on the shelves!
Christmas shopping, a true contact sport. It's the same nightmare every year and some of us are doomed to relive it. Doomed! No matter how solemnly I vow, swear on a stack of bibles even, next year I will be the same disorganised, frantic, panicky, last-minute shopper that I am every year!
Huh! New Year Resolutions. What is it about me? Why can't I do a simple thing like change the habit of a life-time? There's clearly something wrong deep inside me. I'm sure I'm programmed to carry on the way I do. I can't help it. I'd like to be a nice, quiet, careful, considerate, loving husband and father, neighbour and friend. But instead, my wife, my kids, all those around me have to live with Freddie the
Nightmare on Elm St. Sorensen!
It's so good to know that God actually understands the difficulty I have in changing. What grace! He knows I can do better but still loves me when I cussedly ignore his help. But, when I do want to change, when I really have to stop kidding myself, I believe that God's right there to help me.
This is the first week of a new year. And if I’m serious about a new start - I have to look to that God who's got an all year round January sale in new lives. He even does repairs when I go and ruin the new one the same old way I did the last one. You see, he's always been like that - he can't change either.
And if you’re wondering what my new year resolution is, well, despite the bad press and the government’s concern over plastic surgery, I have resolved to do something about various parts of my body. In 2013 I’m asking God to give me me bigger ears, a shorter tongue and a larger heart!
