John Surman's Lifelines

Aled Jones introduces music from the 2012 London Jazz Festival - a new work from reeds player John Surman, jointly commissioned by the BBC and Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival and featuring the voices of the Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. 'Lifelines' explores our challenging relationship with the natural resources around us, with reflections on the Thornhill Colliery disaster of 1947 and a heroic sea rescue off the Cornish coast when 523 souls were saved in the RNLI's biggest ever mission.
