Liz chats with Paul Smith, frontman of Maximo Park. They released their 4th album The National Health in June of this year.
The band formed in Newcastle in 2001, though Paul didn't join till 2 years later. They were signed to Warp records in 2004 and released their debut album A Certain Trigger the following year, for which they were Mercury nominated. The follow up Our Earthly Pleasures came out in 2007. The 3rd album Quicken The Heart came in 2009 and was produced by Nick Launay of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
In March of this year, on announcing the new album Smith said "We're in a global recession and everyone is being bombarded with bouncy, happy music. The nation is out of control and the record is about taking back control, and being a force for change in your own life. It can't speak for everybody but it has its eyes and ears all around us... that's always been a Maxïmo Park thing: look at yourself."
