The director of BBC News, Helen Boaden, and her deputy, Stephen Mitchell, are standing aside whilst an inquiry examines why Newsnight did not pursue an investigation into child abuse by Jimmy Savile.
It follows the resignation of the Director-General George Entwistle on Saturday, after Newsnight ran a story wrongly implicating the former Conservative treasurer Lord McAlpine in a child abuse case.
Plans to win back public trust in the BBC will be set out by the acting Director-General Tim Davie later.
