55 years ago could be said to be the beginning of the space age with the launch of the Soviet Union’s Sputnik and just recently we have seen further developments with the landing on Mars by NASA of the Rover 'Curiosity'. All these remind us of the wonders of the universe, the beauty and power of creation. I personally was reminded of this a few weeks ago as I saw the world I inhabit in a very different way thanks to a sudden storm.

It was deemed to be the worst in living memory. It measured in the top 1% of storm intensity. It hit very fast and hard and affected the whole region: flash floods, roads washed away, dual carriageways turned into canals. The likes of this had never been seen before and was not predicted by any forecast. No one was quite prepared for what was going to come. .

As Director of Youth Services, I was at our annual summer festival with over 600 teenagers. We inhabited a large campsite with tents and marquees decked out for the two day festival. The storm came quickly across the Derwent Valley and hit the campsite with power. The loud thunder, intense rain and fork lightning along with a powerful wind spread fear and panic.

The large marquee where everyone had assembled rattled loudly with the wind, the video screens swayed and the thunder shook the ground that we stood on. The heavy rain and hailstones caused rivers to run through our place of safety. At this point we knew we had to get everyone out. Panic set in and fear gripped the young people who only moments before were in high spirits. A swift evacuation led all to safety.

Although a frightening sight, which I have never witnessed before in this country, it showed the beauty and power of the universe in which we live. We all want to be in control of our lives and in doing so we can miss the mystery that surrounds us.

In reality there are many things in our lives that we will never be able to control and when the storms come our way may we be led through the fear and panic to a place we can experience a deeper mystery: in the warm embrace of the loving God of creation.

Vanessa’s word of the day is 'imbroglio' – meaning a tricky or complicated situation, either political or indeed personal!
