And some two year olds from the most disadvantaged backgrounds receive free education too with more planned to receive it from September. Kirklees Council has announced plans to expand its current system of free childcare even further. They will offer up to 25 hours free child care during term time up to the age of 14 for parents moving from benefits to work. • Lady Anne Clifford

Virginia Woolf once claimed that no woman could have become a successful writer in the time of Shakespeare and yet Dr Jessica Malay has spent the last three years transcribing the work of a very interesting Renaissance female author. Her name was Lady Anne Clifford and – in the first half of the 17th century – she wrote The Great Books of Record which not only chart her family history but also describe the lives of women at the time. Dr Malay joins Jenni to discuss the remarkable Anne Clifford who survived two unhappy marriages and a tough legal battle to inherit her father’s estate as well as rebuilding five castles and many churches and other buildings ravaged by civil war.

  • Intimacy

“Forget love or sex. It’s intimacy we crave – that moment of closeness when we are uniquely understood by another person”. It may sound simple but, as Ziyad Marar demonstrates in his new book, despite the powerful role intimacy plays in our emotional lives, it is, in fact, a tricky business and a lot harder to come by than we may think. He joins Jenni to explain how although we crave intimacy and the success of chat rooms and social networking sites demonstrate our growing desire to connect with another, there are many cultural and psychological impediments to true intimacy.

  • Preparing your child for school

In Scotland the autumn term has begun at most schools, while in England and Wales children are returning to school next week. Some parents will be thankful the long holiday is over but if children are starting school for the first time or moving from primary to secondary school – it can be a challenging time. So how do you best prepare your offspring for the changes? Gill Hines is an education parenting consultant, and Kenny Frederick is the head-teacher at George Green’s School in the Isle of Dogs in East London
