Pause for Thought
With Rabbi Pete Tobias.
I wrote this pause for thought script in a small tent in the middle of a field in the Kent countryside. Over the weekend an annual Jewish event called Limmud - which means learning - took place. And I was there.
Along with me were more than 500 members of the Jewish community. The field was filled with a variety of tents. The larger ones were for group sessions like discussions or study. There was an enormous one that had a stage with a full PA and was the venue for a variety of musical performances over the weekend. The biggest - and most important I suspect - is the food tent.
The weekend is filled with a variety of activities for young and old, ranging from nature walks and kite making to bible study and discussions led by rabbis. Some of the rabbis are orthodox, dissecting in minute detail an aspect of Jewish law from the Torah; others, like me, are Liberal, questioning the origins of that very document.
And everywhere there are tents. It feels like a scene from the bible, when the ancestors of all these Jews were travelling through the wilderness.
One of those ancestors, not from biblical times but a little later, would be most impressed with this event. Rabbi Hillel once emphasised the importance of study saying 'Never say that when I have spare time, I will study because you may never have spare time'. Here's a group of his descendants spending a whole weekend engaged in study. Whether it's children or adults, in a classroom, a tent, or the middle of a field, there is always an opportunity to learn.
