  • Pause for Thought

    With Rev Rob Gillion

Last night I attended the most extraordinary service I have been to at St Paul’s Cathedral. It was a very moving occasion praying for the Paralympics. The theme ‘Courage and Faith’. It drew on the Olympic creed that courage to compete is as important as the fight to be victorious.

I watched with wonder as the athletes danced around in their wheelchairs under the dome playing basketball. Artistry in motion. A number of other Paralympic sports were showcased before and during the service. It was a celebration of the human spirit, the belief and hope in the transforming power of compassion and love.

It brought back memories of a dear friend of mine, Dave Beaney who had been a fearless fireman, but on a call out he suffered a back injury which left him a paraplegic. He became our church youth leader, always wore callipers and walked with sticks. He would drive the mini bus organise teams, he would remove his callipers roll into the swimming pool and impress us all with his powerful swimming. Occasionally he would confide in me his anger and frustration at his limitations, but his love, loyalty and care for the youngsters was limitless. He is sorely missed.

As I watched the Paralympic athletes it reminded me of the determination to fight and overcome. Disable I don’t think so.

For me it is all about inspiration and transformation. The essential tenet is not to have won but fought well. The competitors in the Paralympics have already achieved both. An inspiration to all who have been laid low by disability.

It is an attitude which is at the heart of the Christian Gospel. An attitude of using the knocks in life as a catalyst to inspire others. So thanks in advance to all the athletes as we once again cheer on Team GB.
