  • Ayn Rand – her legacy for American politics

Ayn Rand, author and philosopher, was a Russian émigré to the U.S. She was hugely popular in the late 1950’s and 60’s and her followers saw her as a prophet because of her assault on big government, social welfare, and altruism. But her popularity began to decline - until now, when her ideas are once again finding favour amongst the political right. Paul Ryan, who has just been nominated as Republican Vice Presidential candidate as Mitt Romney’s running mate, gave Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged as Christmas presents and credited her as being “the reason I got into public service”. So how did this atheist, pro-abortion writer become the darling of the political right? Jenni speaks to Professor Jay Kleinberg, Emeritus Professor of history at Brunel University and chair for the Society for the History of Women in the Americas, and Dr James Boys, visiting Senior Research Fellow at Kings in London, whose focus is on U.S. domestic and foreign policy.
