Shirley Conran
By the time her novel Lace was published in 1982, Shirley Conran was 50, had married and divorced designer Terence Conran, written guides to childrearing, the menopause and housework in which she famously claimed that “life is too short to stuff a mushroom.” Lace was an international bestseller and has been re-released to celebrate it’s 30th anniversary. It’s also a milestone year for Shirley who turns 80 next month and joins Jenni to talk about her life and the Conran dynasty.

The second in our series on “summer reads” focuses on The Bonkbuster. These doorstoppers are hundreds of pages long, are set against an extremely wealthy and international backdrop and always involve extremely beautiful women, designer clothes, back-stabbing and lots of sex. Classics in this genre include Riders by Jilly Cooper, Lucky by Jackie Collins and, of course, Lace by Shirley Conran.
