With Madeline Manning Mimms; US Olympic Gold and Silver medalist and Chaplain for London 2012.

London 2012 brings with it, its joys, and its sorrows. Trying to win Olympic medals can bring about pressures that will make you wonder what your purpose is in life, and why you even exist on planet Earth.

I had returned to the Olympic Village in Mexico City after winning my semi-finals in the women’s 800-meter run. I received bad news about another runner in the race.

Vera Nikolic from Yugoslavia had run 300-meters of the race, stopped, walked out of the stadium, and tried to jump off the bridge of the stadium dome. Her coach stopped her. She had an emotional breakdown from the pressure of her delegation who wanted her to bring back the gold medal.

Vera was my toughest competitor. She was the top 800-meter woman in the eastern hemisphere, and I was the top in the western hemisphere. My heart broke for her.

It was two days later, as I was leaving the Olympic Village for the finals of the 800, that I saw Vera standing in front of her dormitory with two men beside her. She was preparing to leave the Games. I went over to her, not knowing how we would communicate, looked into her empty eyes and said, “Vera, you are one of the greatest athletes on this planet. God created you to be great. You can’t give up now. Find God in your life and start again. He loves you.” I embraced her and we both cried. I left for the stadium, won the gold medal, set a world and Olympic record, and was named the Most Outstanding Female Athlete in the world.

The next year in Augsburg, Germany, we met again. She ran across the field to embrace me, and tearfully said, “Madeline, I found God, I found God!” We shed tears of joy.

Our relationship had revealed my purpose in life. To be at the right place, at the right time, with words of life for someone who is dying! For this was I born.
