Storybook Dads
In the UK, over 160,000 children suffer the trauma of the
imprisonment of a parent. Many of these imprisoned parents lose contact with their families making them more likely to reoffend. The Storybook Dads
charity works in over 100 UK prisons helping imprisoned parents to keep in
touch with their children by recording them reading bedtime stories and
messages onto CD and DVD. As well as helping to maintain family ties, the
CDs bring comfort to both parent and child and encourage an interest in
reading. The stories are edited and produced by specially trained prisoners
who learn useful skills and can gain qualifications in audio and video
production. In 2011, Storybook Dads reached over 20,200 beneficiaries. -
