Danish Childcare minister
In Denmark over ninety per cent of children over the age of one are in full time childcare and what parents pay is capped and subsidised by the state. By contrast, childcare costs in the UK account for around a third of average household income – an expense which many British politicians believe is preventing women from to returning to work. The Danish economy has one of the highest rates of female employment in the OECD. Britain lags ten places behind. Jenni talks to Christine Antorini, minister for Children and Education, about whether Denmark has anything to teach us about childcare and gender equality in the workplace.

Kate Dimbleby
Kate Dimbleby has been described as "one of the most versatile singers on the jazz/blues circuit”. As a jazz singer, she has released three albums, sold out the Festival Hall and toured internationally. Her second album, inspired by the life and music of Peggy Lee, accompanied a 50 date sell-out national tour of her one-woman show Fever! The Making of Peggy Lee. In 2010 she devised the cabaret show I’m a Woman a celebration of all the women singers who have inspired her. One of the songs from the show, Lady with the Braid, gained particular interest and it encouraged Kate and pianist Naadia Sheriff to collaborate on a new album Beware of Young Girls : the songs of Dory Previn. They will be performing a live show at the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square from 16-21 July 2012. They join Jenni to discuss the relevance of Dory’s music today, and to perform one of the songs.

A recent picture of a woman in China with a 7-month old foetus shortly after a forced late-term abortion has caused international outrage. Forced abortion is illegal now in China, but it seems that Feng Jianmei was targeted, her husband said, after local officials were unable to pay a fine for breaking birth control rules. Her husband has now not been seen for two days. Why is forced abortion still an issue in China? Jenni talks to the Guardian correspondent Tania Branigan.

She’ll be telling me about her interest in the years between the wars, when many were scarred by the last one and others had their head in the sand about the one that was approaching; and about creating a young heroine who is a chauffeuse.
