    From Canon Ann Easter

The Olympic flame was lit in Greece last week and now, today, it will arrive here in Britain to be taken on a rather roundabout route, carried by lots of different people through loads of different communities, ending up at the Olympic stadium in my home borough of Newham in east London and I’ll be there in June to see it as it goes by our Church – and our church’s been there since the 12th Century and seen a lot of things but not yet, I think, an Olympic flame!

I do like the idea that we’re continuing a tradition that’s been going for thousands of years ever since the Greeks invented a competition between people and nations which was about sport and fitness rather than war - and there’s something about doing the things that people have done for ages, isn’t there?

Last Sunday I preached in St Bartholomew’s Church in East Ham where I was Christened – the font’s still there, with a blue plaque on it, of course - then in the afternoon when we had a bit of sunshine, because my daughter now lives in the house where she and her brothers were brought up, my grandchildren sat on the step in the garden just like their parents did.
We do need traditions I think; there’s something good and positive and life-enhancing about continuity and connectedness that tells us we have a place in this world and in eternity; we are connected to sisters and brothers across the globe and down through time; and each of us is unique and valuable , and, if we think like that, we are perhaps less liable to do things which might hurt each other and spoil the world.

I understand that there are many people who can’t or don’t want to continue traditions from their past; not all traditions are good, by any means – I’m not very keen on the 17th Century custom of wife-selling or putting small children up chimneys, so if you feel like that, then it’s the time to start new, better traditions.

You know what they say – you only need to do something twice and it becomes ‘what we always do’ - it’s a tradition!
