Dear All, So everything is done as far as I can tell … We’re two days away from finally rehearsing the Ray Charles tribute concert. Music has been arranged , songs allocated, script done, artists signed, arrangements for travel, hotels , stageing, etc in place … All we have to do now is stand and deliver. Of course there’ll be a bit more panic before you hear the show on Friday … It still amazes me how quickly all of this has to come together. Pre-production can take weeks, but we actually don’t put the entire show together - with music, script and songs – until the night. The final rehearsal process(3 hours before the show itself )is when we start to knock all the individual elements we’ve got - songs, script, music – into shape. Even then, we don’t have the luxury of a full dress rehearsal – such are the demands of a live broadcast. The only time the thing runs as a whole(with all the ragged bits knocked out in rehearsal we hope!) is when we’re on air … A minute after we finish, we’re tearing up the stage and re-packing all the gear for the next night’s show. It’s a one off performance. That’s why I think so many like to join us for the actual event, or listen on Radio 2. This year we have a great line-up of singers and a wonderful combination of musicians. Madeline Bell, James Torme and Gregory Porter are backed by the Guy Barker Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra. It’s also very exciting to be working with our presenter this year, one of the stars of Homeland – and a huge Ray Charles fan – David Harewood. Overall, there will be around seventy people gathered on stage, and about another twenty backstage doing the lighting, stage management, audio mixing, outside broadcast, front of house etc etc .. You get the idea! Hope you enjoy it – 8pm on Friday. Best, Anthony Cherry, Producer ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ FNIMN Special from the Cheltenham Jazz Festival’
