Pause For Thought
With Archbishop of York, John Sentamu
Chris, did you know that for 25 people in York, Easter was a particularly special time. These people, of varying ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes, decided to be baptised -committing their lives publicly to live the Good News of God in Christ and to serve others.
When we talk about a baptism or a christening, maybe the image some have is of a baby being held over a font and water being poured over its head. Well, our open-air baptisms took place on the steps of York Minster, in a giant pool, in front of hundreds of cheering people.
There was a carnival atmosphere as those getting baptised –young and old – sent a very public message that because of Jesus their lives had been forgiven for past sins, reborn and given hope for the future. They had made the decision to make that fresh start with the Risen Christ.
We are still in the glorious season of Eastertide where Jesus tells us not to be afraid but to have his peace.
I met and baptised Santa (not Father Christmas) but Santa Mezaka a 12-year old Lithuanian girl who had read about the baptisms on my website and came along on the day.
I am always surprised by how God reaches out to people in different ways. But he does, and calls us to a deep abiding trust. He meets us where we are – especially on the ground of our defeat and failure. He invites us to his warm embrace and to be filled with his love.
God made us for a reason. He wants you to be you as he fills you with his own life that never dies.
Wherever you are, it is never too late for a fresh start with God. Christ is Risen and calls each one of us by name: Chris! Moira! Sentamu!
And we answer: “My Lord and my God.”
