My wife often tells the story of a chap we once met in Scotland. Derek, a young man of around twenty with Down’s syndrome had come with his mum to a Christian festival where Bridget and I were speakers. We really enjoyed getting to know them.

‘Can I tell you about something that happened with Derek and me,’ said his mother one day. ‘I think it’s probably the sort of story you’d like.’ She was absolutely right, and this was the story.

Encouraged by his mum Derek had got involved with some kind of local Paralympic meeting where gold, silver and bronze medals were to be awarded for all sorts of events. Derek entered for two of these, the first being a quite short running race. He set off at a fairly pedestrian pace, but gradually gained speed until he overtook everyone and crossed the winning line in first place. His pride on receiving the gold medal was indescribable.

The second event was a walking race. Derek took an early lead and maintained it until he nearly reached the finishing line at which point he simply stopped dead. The next athlete passed him to take the gold medal place, and Derek took silver. ‘Derek,’ said his mum later, ‘I don’t understand you. You could have won. Why didn’t you just go through the tape and get another gold medal?’ Derek gave his mother a pitying look. How could she possibly fail to understand?’ ‘Mu-u-m!’ he said. ‘Obviously I wanted two medals of different colours.’ Of course, thought his mum, silly me. Of course that’s what he wanted...’

All sorts of winning will be going on at the London marathon on Sunday, and it will not be exclusively concerned with the position of competitors as they cross the line. The same is true of the ‘race of life’. There are many medals to be won, and, as Derek can testify, they come in a multitude of different and attractive colours.
