An Insider's View by Double Bassist Andy Wood.
This week’s Friday Night is brought to you all the way from the Colosseum... and why not? After all we’re a pretty epic bunch at times if we put our minds to it; gladiators of a sort – wading into battle against declining artistic and cultural standards; proudly flying the flag for... well, whatever it is we do. And in this, our sixtieth celebratory year it seems kinda fitting don’tcha think? I wonder what the weather’s like in Rome at the moment...
BBC Concert Orchestra
Sorry, what..? The Colosseum Watford... ah... well... err... I’m sure that’ll be nice too... “The Rome of the north” I believe they call it. If it’s all the same to you I’ll keep my gladiator outfit and sword – can turn pretty nasty in that high street – but I’ll probably leave the sunscreen at home.
All manner of lovely people joined us on stage for the day, most of whom I’m pleased to say I recognised. Kerry Ellis was our host and star for the evening, eliciting no end of admiring glances and luring the listener - not to their doom, I hasten to add - with her siren song. (I’ve gone to a lot of trouble setting up the dodgy Rome/mythology gag – I might as well milk it for as long as possible.)
Also featuring were Jonathan Ansell – late of G4, or G1 as I like to think of him now; Ramin Karimloo and that veritable rock god, Brain May.
All disappointment at finding ourselves not in Rome was overcome by dining at Watford’s premier Italian restaurant and after a couple of bottles of “rhythm enhancer” nothing could go wrong.... -
