Factsheet for Sunday 18th March
For Mothering Sunday Aled Jones meets inspirational mothers including the foster mum who's cared for 93 children and Britain's Got Talent finalist Jean Martyn who gives thanks for her own mother. The hymns for Mothering Sunday come from churches and Cathedrals across the UK.
As well as being a nurse and mother of three, Sharon is a Matron and Lt Col in the Territorial Army with whom she has served for over twenty years. Based at the 207 Field Hospital in Manchester, she has served in Iraq and , most recently, in Afghanistan. Here she speaks movingly and honestly about the horrors that she saw and how her faith gave her strength in very challenging circumstances.
Jean is a talented musician who wowed the judges with her boogie-woogie organ playing on last year’s ITV show Britain’s Got Talent. She plays the organ at her local church in Brewood, Staffordshire and gives concerts all over the country. Here Jeans talks about the poignancy of Mothering Sunday this year, as it will be the first without her own mother. The piece of music played under the prayer was written by Jean in tribute to her mother.
The Giffard family have lived in Chillington Hall, Staffordshire for 29 generations. John explains the tradition that servants in the hall were allowed a Sunday off to visit their mothers and their home churches.
Phyllis and her husband Mick were named MBEs in the New Year’s Honours list after fostering 93 children over more than 30 years. Her family organise a gathering at which Aled surprises her with a special ‘Mothering Sunday’ cake! We also hear from some of Phyllis’s sons and daughters.
