A pilot scheme, called Deciding Right and the first of its kind in the UK, has been launched in the region.
Patients in the North East will be able to record on a form their decisions about their treatment. Hospices, hospitals and health care organisations will then have to recognise these wishes.
Presenter and actor Chris Connel looks at how the North East is leading the way in empowering patients to make choices about their own deaths.
