Holiness is a complicated idea. The philosopher and theorist W B Gallie came up with a helpful way to explain how we use and understand words when describing complex things. He proposed the idea of the ‘essentially contested term’ as way of grappling with those words that we all pretty much understand in the same way in broad terms, but that become less certain when we begin to think about them in detail.

In this way, we might think about holiness as an essentially contested term. Broadly, it seems to be straight forward, a state of absolute purity, a state of perfection. But if we begin to think about holiness on a case by case basis, and how it works in the everyday world, it becomes less clear cut.

Perhaps it’s not just simply a fixed, single state of being. Instead, it might be helpful to think about holiness as something more fluid; a process, or even a journey. We might, for example, recognise holiness in another: where their life and works are the inspiration for our daily journey through life. Or perhaps their experience can be a guide and comfort for those on a spiritual quest. Or even their example can encourage to us to become a better person, their lives can be a pointer towards to the best people we can be.

Even in all its rich complexity, perhaps holiness is simple; it is that which inspires us to live better and more fulfilling lives.
