Told in their own voices we hear the stories of some of the women involved in the suffragette movement.
This week the government announced that it wants to introduce the idea of shared parenting after separation so that every child has a meaningful relationship with both parents. It's a system that was introduced in Australia five years, we'll be finding out how it has worked there.
The female folk trio, Lady Maisery who are resurrecting the dying art of diddling sing live in the studio.
As many as one in ten women suffer with post natal depression but what impact does it have on the father. We speak to one man who wants to bring partners of affected women together.

The voices of the suffragette women

In the 1970s, Oxford academic Brian Harrison carried out some of the most extensive interviews with women involved in the suffragette movement. At that time the women were mostly in their eighties and nineties. These oral histories housed at The Women’s Library, London Metropolitan University have never been broadcast before. Some of them can now be heard in a new documentary on Radio 4 tomorrow night. Brian Harrison and Krista Cowman, Professor of History at Lincoln University join Jenni to discuss their significance.

Archive Hour, ‘The Lost World of the Suffragettes’ is broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday 11th February at 8.00pm presented by Dan Snow.

The impact of post natal depression on fathers

As many as one in ten women suffer from post natal depression but it can also have a knock on affect for the partner and other children involved. Mark Williams from Bridgend has set up a website called Father’s Reaching Out’ to provide an outlet for fathers as he felt there was no one to turn to when his wife was going through severe post natal depression. Mark and Michelle Williams tell their story. To discuss the wider impact Jenni is joined by Liz Wise who is a post natal depression counsellor.

“Shared Parental Rights”; what can we learn from the Australian experience?

This week the Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke announced plans to reform the family justice system. As part of a major overhaul to the system recommendations have made been made to introduce the principal of shared parenting and the use of more mediation in settling family disputes. A ministerial group will report back in two months with a wording to be inserted into the legislation ensuring that children maintain a "meaningful relationship" with both parents. In 2006 The Australian government introduced similar legislation when they passed the Family Law Amendment (Shared Parental Responsibility) Act which set out to make both parents responsible by introducing the concept of ‘equal shared parental responsibility’. Since then research has highlighted problems with the legislation criticising the laws for not working in the best interest of the child. So what lessons can Britain learn from the Australian experience? Jenni is joined by Lisa Young, Associate Professor in Law School at Murdoch University, Perth, Australia to discuss the issues.

Lady Maisery

Lady Maisery, a new young female folk trio are gaining a lot of attention. Their debut album ‘Weave and Spin’ has been nominated for best debut album at the Spirit Awards and they are about to start a national tour. They use the tradition of diddling in their music, which has almost died out in England but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. They join Jenni to discuss and play live in the studio.
