Synopsis

Listeners talk about the impact of Graham Reid's Billy Plays 30 years after they were first broadcast.

Stephen O'Reilly from Belfast

Stephen O'Reilly talks about growing up in the Catholic St James' area of Belfast, near to where the Billy plays were filmed. He was impressed with how working class life was portrayed on screen, and fascinated by how similar the lives of people from a Protestant background were to his own life. He also discusses how the troubles were a backdrop to a family drama, the portrayal of the UDA, the role of 'hardmen' in society, and Billy's complex relationship with his father.
