Friday and its my day off, my weekend if you like. A day for recuperation before Sunday. After all as everybody knows clergy only work on Sundays. Pa!
Well even if I do only work on Sundays, a chance to recharge batteries with a day of unstructured relaxation is very important. The tales of the creation of the world in the book of Genesis bring this home to us as we hear of God resting on the 7th day.
Jesus also recognised the importance of this as the gospel tell us he often went up the hill side to pray and reflect. Although curiously Jesus also challenged the prescriptive laws of the Pharisees about working on the Sabbath.
Today I will have lunch with a group of other clergy. We have a pint or two and sort out all the problems of the church and the world. Not a bad agenda for a couple of hours by a warm fire!
But all too often we go through life, not stopping for that recharge and then we wonder why we get stressed and anxious about things. People who know me well will say Physician heal thyself but at least today I am taking seriously the need to rest.
Maybe it can’t be today that you can take a rest, but do carve out some time for much needed renewal.
Almighty God, who on the 7th day of creation rested and who teaches us to do the same; grant us space in our busy lives to pause a while and renew our lives, that on return to the hectic world we may have been strengthened by the space we have made. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen
