John McCarthy looks at the delights and difficulties of visiting the occupied territories of East Jerusalem and the West Bank with writer Sarah Irving who has published the first new guide to Palestine for many years, circus performer China Fish who recently returned from entertaining children there and traveller Gail Simmons who sampled the alternatives to the mass tourism.

Sarah Irving

is a freelance writer specialising in social and environmental issues, Palestine and the wider Middle East, and travel. She is co-author of Gaza: Beneath the Bombs, and the new edition of the Bradt travel guide to Palestine, the first update for more than a decade. Sarah has travelled widely in Europe, the Middle East and Central America.

is a performance artist and involved with several theatre projects in the Bristol area. China recently returned from a tour taking clowning and circus to children of the West Bank with a group called Circus2Iraq. They played in schools, villages and refugee camps.

is a writer who has contributed to many UK national newspapers. Gail enjoys writing about independent and ethical travel. She has travelled widely and led walking tours in Syria, Jordan and Oman. Last year Gail took her own walking tour of the West bank.
