Episode 2 of 2
Duration: 1 hour
The three men soon discover that the end of October is a bad time to look for boats. It's the end of the season for some and the start of the racing season in the Caribbean for others. But few can make it to New York. They decide to take a trip to Cape Cod to see a famous lifeboat; en route they have a go at sports fishing, and see a pilot whale.
At Provincetown, right on the tip of Cape Cod, they see the USCG 36500, a boat that has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places after saving 32 passengers from a sinking oil tanker in a storm in 1952.
Next, they go to Martha's Vineyard to visit boat builders Gannon and Benjamin. Griff has connections with the yard as they restored his yacht Undina. But their efforts to help the boys find a suitable boat are futile and the trio head for Newport, Rhode Island, known as the sailing capital of America. There, they split up.
Griff strikes it lucky and finds a British-built Spirit Yacht, sailing under an American flag, which he thinks would be perfect. But when he invites the others on board for lunch, it turns out that Dara was also successful in finding a boat. An argument breaks out and they decide to go to the parade on different boats.
They catch a lift into New York on Aphrodite, a luxury gentlemen's motor yacht from the 1930's, which once belonged to an ambassador to the Court of St James. However, the weather has taken a change for the worse, and a huge storm is forecast. Ironically, it is 20 years to the day since the Perfect Storm hit New England. With bad weather descending on New York, none of the three are sure if their boats will make it in time for the parade.
