John McCarthy looks at the changing nature of the traditional attractions of England with historian John Julius Norwich, curator Lucy Worsley and journalist Martin Wainwright. Together they discuss the appeal of English places from Kensington Palace to Watford Gap and why we look for the past in palaces and cottages.

  • John Julius Norwich

    is a historian, travel writer, biographer and TV and radio presenter. For his latest book John Julius selected a hundred places, which across the centuries, were linked to some historically significant event or development in England. He has visited them all over the years from the grand palaces of Kew and Hampton Court to smaller residences such as Milton’s cottage in Chalfont St Giles and, closer to the present day, to a house he thinks is underrated, Cragside in Northumberland.

  • Lucy Worsley

    is a television presenter and an author of historical books. She has been the Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces since 2003. The independent charity looks after The Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace State Apartments, the Banqueting House in Whitehall, and Kew Palace in Kew Gardens.
