REVIEW OF SHERLOCK HOLMES - A GAME OF SHADOWS
DANNY: There’s more of everything in this sequel, more visual jiggery pokery, more Victoriana porn which I’m rather partial to and more than anything, more Robert Downey Jr and isn’t he glorious? The canny casting move here is casting Jared Harris as Moriarty - he’s got the charisma to hold his place against Downey Jr - they’re in perfect synchronicity.
CLAUDIA: Do you think Guy Ritchie likes guns? You will see 900 slo-mo shots of bullets in this film. I also want to mention the women in this film – they’re not given anything to do and the plot at the beginning makes no sense. However, what saves it is the insane campness of it - the naked wrestling is absolutely brilliant.
DANNY: Both films are the most ludicriously homo-erotic things I’ve ever seen but I’m very happy with this film – I’d recommend it as a fantastic Christmas panto of a film. -
REVIEW OF MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE- GHOST PROTOCOL
CLAUDIA: It’s Tom – Risky Business Tom so I can’t be angry with him no matter how bonkers he might seem. He’s nearly 50, he looks 12 – he’s running, jumping, racing. It’s Christmas , it’s Mission Impossible – come on. I think it’s brilliant. The star of this film is Simon Pegg – he doesn’t overplay it and is laugh-out loud fantastic. I liked it – I liked it a lot more than M:I3.
DANNY: What Brad Bird brings to the table is this huge visual imagination and the spectacle of it all is awe inspiring. It’s genuinely awesome. My problem with the movie is that it hangs around far too long – the last half an hour is very saggy and confused. I also have a problem with Tom Cruise – he doesn’t make room for anyone else in the film – except Simon Pegg who gives a very well judged comic performance. -
REVIEW OF THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - Claudia and Danny's film of the week
DANNY: The film is as good as you hope it would be – it hangs on to what’s important in the novel –it’s faithful and ambitious. This is a fantastic movie - for Fincher fans it’s like Seven but with the benefit of 15 years’ more film-making experience. Fincher’s grown into this elegant director and he has you in the palm of your hand.
CLAUDIA: I felt wrong going in because I loved the original and Noomi’s Lisbeth so I felt unfaithful. But I thought it was absolutely excellent – I wanted to go straight back in and watch it again. -

CLAUDIA AND DANNY'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO FANS.
The Dark Knight (2008)
If you love your blockbusters dark and compelling then check out Nolan's exemplary sequel to Batman Begins (if you haven't already). Featuring an extraordinary, Oscar-winning performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker this is intense, intelligent drama on the big screen.
Insomnia (1997)
Nolan directed the 2002 American version but the original Norwegian blockbuster directed by Erik Skjoldbjaerg, starring Stellan Skarsgard is a tense, psychological drama about a cop who accidentally shoots his colleague during a murder investigation. Spectacular cinematography in the long polar summer make this an original and unusual crime thriller.
Felicia's Journey (1999)
Adapted from a novel by William Trevor, this film about a young pregnant girl who is befriended by the dangerous and sinister Bob Hoskins is a dark but brilliant exploration of emotionally damaged characters. Directed by Atom Egoyan, the film takes unexpected twists and turns to reveal the horror that can lurk in the most ordinary of places.
