Francesca Annis
Francesca Annis was Elizabeth Taylor's protégée, hung out with the radical feminist crowd in the 1960’s, and played Lady Macbeth in the nude. Now this consistently surprising actress has at the age of 66, taken on her first musical role for more than 40 years. Her first singing part was at the age of 20, and she says she found the experience so terrifying she has never sung since, not even in the bath. She joins Jenni to talk about what has persuaded her to tackle the role of Joanne in Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the Sheffield Crucible.

Candlelight
Scented candles are one of the most popular Christmas gifts for women. Yet the first candles were reed wicks dipped in stinking animal fat. The rich could light their homes with candles of wax and for them the candle was more than merely a source of light – it was also a symbol of their wealth. Today candles continue to symbolize celebration, mark romance, soothe the senses, define ceremony, and accent home decors. Candle Chandler, Rachel Vosper, and lighting historian, Maureen Dillon, join Jenni to discuss the allure of candlelight.

Neighbourliness
How well do you know your neighbours or even their names? Not well, if you are to believe the many surveys that claim neighbourliness is on its way out. When retired lecturer Elizabeth Sandie decided to write a book on the social history of her Edwardian terraced street in York she approached her neighbours to ask them about their lives, the youngest interviewee was 14, the oldest nearly 90. She discovered the pleasure of getting to know her neighbours and hearing about their diverse life stories. Jenni is joined by Liz Richardson, Research Fellow, Institute for Political and Economic Governance, Manchester University who has looked at the importance of neighbours and by Helen Hibberd, Co-ordinator of Chorlton Good Neighbours who have been offer practical support and friendship to local people since 1967.
"Just One Street" by Elizabeth Sandie, £9.99, ISBN 978-0-9570422-0-9, was published in a short print run at the end of October 2011. It gives brief sketches of the lives of thirty neighours from a wide range of backgrounds in an Edwardian terrace in York. It is available post free direct from the author ea.sandie@talktalk.net. -
Abortion and Mental Health
A major review of abortion has concluded it doesn’t increase the risk of a woman suffering mental health problems. The research found that women with an unwanted pregnancy had a higher rate of mental health problems, but this wasn’t affected by whether they decide to have an abortion or give birth. Prof Tim Kendall, a member of the steering group which carried out the review, and Jenni Bristow, editor of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service’s Abortion Review, join Jenni Murray to discuss the findings.

Ice Hotel
It may not seem a terribly attractive prospect as the winter chill sets it, but lots of people seem to find the idea of an Ice Hotel worth a visit. They’ve popped up in parts of Scandinavia and there’s one in North America – just outside Quebec. Each year thousands of couples, lots of them British, go there to get married or to register a civil partnership. Its’ walls are up to four feet thick and the bedroom temperatures can fall as low as minus 30. Anne Kostalas visted an ice hotel in Quebec at the height of the wedding season.
