Pause For Thought: Canon Garth Hewitt
Where we live we don't have a garden, we just have a little patio, and I think because I don't have a garden, I love it when I find one, especially when I find one in unexpected places.
Recently I was in Durban, South Africa where we are involved with a street child project called Umthombo. They are based in a large warehouse and just outside it there is a piece of rough land on a roundabout, which, with the cooperation of the local municipality, they've turned into a vegetable garden and it was fantastic to see how beautiful it’s become. An ex street child called Bhoyi Bhoyi is the gardener. He was trained by the municipality and he is really proud of the garden.
It was a thrill to sit there with him and to simply enjoy it and I found it a place of peace. And I thought of those rather romantic words “You're nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.” But when I considered Bhoyi Bhoyi's life and the changes that had come over him and the pride he has in having a job where he can look after a garden, I thought on this occasion there was a lot of truth in it.
I also have a friend called Zoughbi Zoughbi who is from Bethlehem, and the Director of a Conflict Resolution Centre. They are based in a house right by the huge separation wall that blocks off the main entrance to Bethlehem and though this is an ugly wall that separates people, they have turned the garden of the house into a place of true beauty. They have planted trees and shrubs making an arboretum, a place where people can come and find peace and be counselled.
Conflicts can be resolved in the garden by the wall - planting hope in a context where many might give up hope.
So I give thanks for the two little gardens of hope in unusual places, both I think in some ways bringing us nearer God's heart.
Vanessa's Word Of The Day
Continuing our 'mal' theme on Word Of The Day, today's word is 'malfeasance', which means a wrongdoing or improper or dishonest conduct, especially by a person who holds a position of trust.
Something Mr Dedicoat could never be accused of, could he?
