Duration:
45 minutes
First broadcast:
Friday 11 November 2011

Amy Rosenthal talks about adapting her father's award winning television play, Bar Mitzvah Boy, for Radio 4. Is legalising prostitution the best way to make sex workers safer? Feminist Campaigner, Julie Bindel, has been to Nevada in the U.S, where brothels are legal, to see if there's anything to be learnt from their approach to prostitution. Major Nicola Roberts is one of only a handful of highly skilled women soldiers trained to find and disarm improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. But why did she choose to enter one of the most dangerous of professions? As a teenager Nicky Doherty's kept her chaotic home life secret from her friends and schoolmates. She believes there's a huge taboo about having parents who drink to excess, and is working to help dispel the stigma and shame many children feel about living with an alcoholic mother or father.

  • Amy Rosenthal

A new version of Jack Rosenthal's award-winning television play about a boy having his Bar Mitzvah has been specially adapted by his daughter, playwright Amy Rosenthal. The play tells the story of 13-year-old Eliot Green who is about to become a man in the Jewish religion at least – but is he ready? This play, along with many others, established the late Jack Rosenthal as one of Britain's best loved television writers. A master at creating characters, his plays were always sharp and finely tuned with a rich helping of humour. Amy Rosenthal, whose mother is the actor Maureen Lipman, joins Jenni Murray to talk about her motivation in adapting her father’s work, being in the shadow of her famous parents and her own sometimes difficult journey as a writer.

  • Nevada Brothels

    Nevada Brothels

The number of sex workers murdered across Britain in the past decade is thought to be anywhere between 60 and 140, with only a quarter to a third of cases ever solved. Given the nature of their work, prostitutes are left hopelessly unprotected, prey to men like Peter Sutcliffe, the Ipswich serial killer Stephen Wright and Stephen Griffiths, known as the Crossbow Cannibal, who killed three prostitutes in Leeds. But how do we make the lives of sex workers safer? Among the measures being suggested are managed zones where prostitutes can work under the watchful eye of the police, decriminalisation, or even full legislation, but some decry these measures as legitimising the abuse of women. In Nevada there are 24 legal brothels – it’s the only U.S. state which permits legalised prostitution. Accompanied by Radio Leeds presenter Liz Green, feminist Campaigner Julie Bindel, and former sex worker Charlie Daniels, went to visit three Brothels in Nevada - including the Moonlight Bunny Ranch in Carson City - to see if we can learn anything from their approach to prostitution.

As a member of 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment it’s her job to place herself in danger so that others can be safe. But why would you choose to enter one of the most dangerous of professions and what goes through your mind as you make that long, lonely walk to disarm a bomb designed to kill and maim. As the country commemorates all those killed in the defence of others Major Nicola Roberts joins Jenni to talk about the risks she and her colleagues have to face.

  • Children of Alcoholics

Jenni is joined by Nicky Doherty, who now volunteers for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics, and by Susan George, team leader, at the Substance Using Family Support Service – one of the services provide by Turning Point to discuss where young people can go to for help.
