Do dads need more rights?

Proposals to automatically give parents equal access to kids after a separation or divorce have been rejected in a review of the family justice system in England.

Karen Woodall, director of the charity Centre for Separated Families explains why she doesn't advocate the presumption of shared care, with each case needing to be judged on its merits. But she explains why it is important to maintain the principle that children have a meaningful relationship with their father.

David Emmerson, family lawyer and mediator, says that political headlines make the report seem very anti-father - but in reality the law tends to be fairer. He believes that forcing shared care creates more problems than it solves, and it can only work in cases where the couple is relatively co-operative.
