Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team enlist the help of the local community to finish converting a two-bedroom bungalow into a four-bedroom home for a family at the end of their tether.

The tradesmen from Ottery St Mary in Devon turn out in force to help the Wright family who have suffered years of illness and bad luck. Dad Ian is a music teacher at the local secondary school. One of his children struggles with learning difficulties and the family moved to the area to get him into a school that could cater for his educational needs. The family bungalow was too small and, with mum Morny battling a chronic long-term illness, all the work on the house fell to Ian, who became overwhelmed and in desperate need of help.
